Hackers could monitor your BRAINWAVES to steal passwords

Researchers have revealed that brainwaves can be used to steal online passwords. A team at the University of Alabama at Birmingham found brainwave-sensing headsets, also known as EEG or electroencephalograph headsets, put users at risk. They have become commonplace both as medical devices but also as game controllers, ranging in price from $150 to $800. Researchers say EEG devices and future brain computer interfaces can be hacked to monitor what a user is typing. Elon Musk's latest company Neuralink is working to link the human brain with a machine interface by creating micron-sized devices.

Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham suggest that brainwave-sensing headsets, also known as EEG or electroencephalograph headsets, need better security after a study reveals hackers could guess a user's passwords by monitoring their brainwaves. EEG headsets are advertised as allowing users to use only their brains to control robotic toys and video games specifically developed to be played with an EEG headset. There are only a handful on the market, and they range in price from $150 to $800. Nitesh Saxena, Ph.D., associate professor in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences Department of Computer and Information Sciences, and Ph.D. student Ajaya Neupane and former master's student Md Lutfor Rahman, found that a person who paused a video game and logged into a bank account while wearing an EEG headset was at risk for having their passwords or other sensitive data stolen by a malicious software program. "These emerging devices open immense opportunities for everyday users," Saxena said.

An immersive film project is attempting to understand how people react in stressful situations by using artificial intelligence (AI), film and gaming technologies to place participants inside a simulated riot and then detecting their emotions in real time. Called Riot, the project is the result of a collaboration between award winning multidisciplinary immersive filmmaker Karen Palmer and Professor Hongying Meng from Brunel University. The two have worked together previously on Syncself2, a dynamic interactive video installation. Riot was inspired by global unrest, and was specifically inspired by Palmer's experience of watching live footage of the Ferguson protests in 2015. "I felt a big sense of frustration, anger and helplessness. I needed to create a piece of work that would encourage dialogue around these types of social issues. Riots all over the world now seem to be [the] last form of [community] expression," she said.

Organizers want to make it an annual inter-collegiate spectacle, involving ever-more dynamic moves and challenges, and a trophy that puts the brain on a pedestal. "With events like this, we're popularizing the use of BCI instead of it being stuck in the research lab," said Chris Crawford, a Florida PhD student in human-centered computing. "BCI was a technology that was geared specifically for medical purposes, and in order to expand this to the general public, we actually have to embrace these consumer brand devices and push them to the limit."
